Thallus placodioid, closely adpressed, forming orbicular patches or rosettes, greenish yellow to yellow-brown, glossy and epruinose or whitish-pruinose; marginal lobes plane to concave, corticate below; marginal parts and edges usually whitish grey-pruinose; central parts ±areolate or lobate. Soredia absent. Prothallus not visible. Apothecia sessile, 0.4–1.8 mm diam.; disc yellow-brown to reddish brown, epruinose to slightly greyish-pruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, prominent, persistent, entire, ±verrucose or becoming flexuose, whitish grey-pruinose or epruinose. Cortex hyaline, indistinct, inspersed with small crystals, 20–50 µm thick laterally and basally. Amphithecium lacking crystals, densely packed with algae; algal layer continuous below hymenium. Parathecium hyaline, with small crystals. Epihymenium yellowish brown, c. 10–15 µm thick, with numerous small crystals insoluble in KOH. Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched, not or slightly thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 9.0–16.0 × 4.5–7.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K–, C–, Pd–; containing leucotylin (major), usnic acid (major) and zeorin (major). | ||
A saxicolous species which occasionally occurs on other substrata. It is known from only one locality in S.A. Cosmopolitan and very common in the Northern Hemisphere. | ||
